Why is my muse sometimes a pushy bitch?

27 Oct

And she’s really pissing me off. Her job is to inspire me, to waggle her fingers and direct me in the way of producing best-selling prose. What is she doing? Harassing people I know. For reasons I don’t quite understand, lately I have been unable to write because that’s getting in the way of me telling other people that they should be writing. She’s hijacked my Hotmail and has started spamming people with newsletters, links, and e-zines in order for them to get as excited about writing as she is. There’s only one problem. No one is as excited as she is about writing, so what to do? A swift choke hold and some duct tape may be in order to shut her up. So, if you’ve been victim of my pushy muse, I apologize. I have to do something if I’m not writing.

But, on the other hand, she’s got me thinking. And what I’m realizing is: DO. NOT. DO. THIS. ALONE. Surround yourself with people who are supportive of and who are interested (on a deeper level than, “Oh, you’re a writer? How neat.”) in your goals. People with whom you can connect on the level of craft. Join a writer’s group or start one yourself. Start a blog or share a journal with a friend. Don’t isolate yourself in your writing. After all, once you get published, there needs to be somebody who’ll be wanting a copy.

I’m sorry your muse is such a pushy broad. Mine is apparently into abandonment. She likes vacationing without me A LOT.
