EditMinion (Or How Many Times Can I Facepalm in One Go)

10 Jul

I came across EditMinion a while back, having seen it featured on someone else’s blog. I popped over and thought, “Wow, doesn’t this look interesting?” Basically, you input small amounts of text (it says a chapter, but use discretion because if you post too much, the script quits working), and it goes to work, finding the editing errors we sometimes miss.

The dreaded adverbs are highlighted in all their -ly bliss, sentences ending in *gasp* a preposition, passive voice, and a host of other unsavory writing practices. That being said, it’s not infallible, and doesn’t take into account the sometimes more informal aspect of fiction writing. So, use it, but take each mistake individually. Yes, sometimes, there will be an outright error, but otherwise, take EditMinion’s comments as suggestions to tighten up your writing into something more concrete. Easy to use, free, and none of your work is stored on the site, so you can feel free about posting all your bon mots.

If you find yourself without a reliable editor at your disposal, this is a free and easy way to clean up your work before sending on to beta readers or other editors or what not to look for more in-depth problems with plot, structure, and characterization. It will definitely help you to see what your hang-ups are.

Overall, it’s a great free tool, but don’t take every “mistake” it finds to heart. Happy writing!!

That is an awesome tool-I heard about it somewhere else, but haven’t had much of a chance to get around to it yet. Which means I definitely should! Great post Tara, and I LOVE your new blog design! 😀
